I agree with what you say. We must however create simple user interfaces rather than interfaces that only Phd graduates can navigate.

Most people struggle with technology because many applications are too difficult to use unless the user has acquired prior experience. Online applications can and should be simple and intuative to be used by someone who posesses only modest prior experience with similar applications.

Those of us who have been involved in technology for a while and who find applications relatively easy to understand and use, need to be mindful of individuals who have not had our levels of experience and do not have the same interest in exploring complicated applications to learn how they work.

Check out the online application available at http://www.westcoast.com.au/editor. This app is well on the way to being as powerful as many similar offline page applications. Certainly, not all features are yet available, however there are enough available to meet the requirements of most potential users, and it is only a matter of time before more features are available within the app.

Currently the application only runs within Firefox, although a version that runs within the majority of browsers (with the possible exception of IE) is on the way.

You should never declare a variable into a conditional (if, while, etc.).

You should declare your variable before with a default value, and then use it in a "if". Its a common rule in all languages, or?

functions are designed to be nested within other functions to create a closure -- or a transparent link to it's parent functions context. If you use the 'var' keyword, the intrepreter thinks you will be redefining that var, so it does it for you just prior to the function actually begins to run, hence breaking the closure to the var defined in it's parent.
